As a geophysicist, Roy started work on EGS around 1976 and has continued working on the development of EGS technology to date.  He was the deputy director of the UK EGS program in Cornwall before joining the European EGS program at Soultz, France in 1990 as Scientist in Charge and program coordinator.

Roy left the European EGS program in 2005 and is a consultant/advisor on the EGS and associated technologies to various governments/organisations in Europe, the United States, and the Far East. He is a director of a number of geothermal related companies. He contributed to the MIT report “Geothermal Development in the US”. Roy was the Task Leader for the “EGS” Annex of the IEA’s Geothermal Implementing Agreement (IEA/GIA) for over 15 years and has represented the IEA/GIA at meetings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Roy received a coveted Special Achievement Award at the 2018 annual meeting of the Geothermal Resources Council (GRC) in Nevada, USA. Roy received the Patricius Medal for his contribution to geothermal worldwide at the European Geothermal Congress in Berlin 2022. Roy is the Chairman of Technical Advisory Committee of current the EGS development at the Eden site in Cornwall, UK
