Kevin Wilson

SpecialityHSE, HM Chief Inspector of Mines

From a multi-generational mining family, Kevin joined the National Coal Board in Nottinghamshire in the 1980’s. He completed his mining/quarrying education at Trent Polytechnic and Doncaster College to Chartered Engineer and gained his Mining 1st Class Certificate of competency.

Kevin was an official at Bilsthorpe Colliery when the tragedy occurred in 1993, a major fall of ground resulting in six men being trapped of which three were killed. This experience influenced his career direction; following contraction of the coal mining sector in the 1990’s, Kevin joined the Health and Safety Executive and completed a Post Graduate Diploma at Heriot-Watt University. He gained regulatory experience as an Inspector in heavy industries, construction (major infrastructure projects and civil tunnelling) in addition to the quarrying/opencast coal sectors. In 2014 Kevin moved to the Mines Inspectorate returning to his underground mining roots and in 2023 was promoted to be the Chief Inspector of Mines.
