Alan Williams graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Mining Geology from the Royal School of Mines and worked at Wheal Jane tin mine as student and then in gold and uranium exploration in Canada and Sweden. He had a long career as chief geologist for Pilkington (now NSG), the international glass company, sourcing glass-making raw materials in over 20 countries. More recently, he has applied his expertise to prehistoric mining archaeology and completed his PhD at the University of Liverpool tracing copper from the Bronze Age Great Orme mine in north Wales into France and Scandinavia. He jointly initiated Project Ancient Tin with Ben Roberts in the Department of Archaeology at Durham University tracing Britain’s Bronze Age tin trade into Europe and the Mediterranean. Funding is currently being sought for an archaeological excavation on St Michael’s Mount, probably the prehistoric tin trading island of Ictis mentioned in classical texts.
